A first class Frame Drum developed in cooperation with Murat Coşkun.

The name Kara Def originates from the Turkish language and means “black drum”. But it is not only the color of the hide that makes it a special drum, it is the sum of its components that complement each other to form an independent harmonious creation.

The deep frame made from finely sanded cherry wood provides good resonance and sound dynamics. The selected hide is specially prepared to give a balanced sound. For maximum grip the surface of the hide is additionally treated so that the singing rubbing tones can be produced without interruption. Because of the use of a patented vibration free suspension system made from exotic woods, the extra strong holding cross on the inside of the drum has optimal handling possibilities and at the same time optimal sound development. Even the tuning screws of the Kara Def are mounted vibration free into the frame.

The markedly strong and enduring sound of this special drum is warm and dark, and at the same time full of nuances in the overtones.

It is the combination of the full independent sound with the optimal handling and perfect workmanship that lead to a drum which, in a very short time after its successful development, has found enthusiastic friends at home and abroad.

“With this instrument a frame drum has been created, that for me more than fulfills its function to have a natural sound in concert. Because of its special characteristics, the Kara Def can wonderfully unfold its sound. The overtone richness in the higher range of this drum is enormous. In the lower range the melodiousness of the bass can hardly be excelled. The skin reacts quickly and because of the special handling of the surface and its particular grip, I can tirelessly produce overtones by rubbing and can hold them for a long time. These are sounds that can carry me far away…”
