KANJIRA

The Kanjira is the smallest frame drum made in our workshop and is unique in its kind. Whereas the conventional Kanjira must first be wetted with water to be playable, the ANKLANG-Kanjira is equipped with a tuning mechanism that allows the hide to be tuned to a desired pitch. A very important criterion for this drum with its origin in South India is the flexibility of its drumhead. Traditionally the skin of lizards was used as the material for the drumheads but this is no longer possible because the lizards are now a protected species. After long experimentation and in cooperation with professional Kanjira players, we have developed a method of treating goat skin that results in a drumhead with the flexibility equal to that of lizard skin. This makes it possible to achieve wonderful modulations in pitch combined with a dynamic sound that one would not think could come from such a small instrument. The high quality workmanship of this Kanjira handcrafted in precious cherry wood guarantees a comfortable handling and makes it a joy to play. Another unique feature is that the coins that serve as jingles on this Kanjira, are also used on the original, and are interchangeable.
