The Daf is a variation of the Frame Drum and it is widely distributed in Persia. Traditionally it is used in sacred musik, accompanying the mystical trance – dances with ecstatically appearing rhythms. On the inside of the frame are attached numerous fine metal rings that produce a fine pattering sound when the drum is beaten. Because of this the deep and warm drum sound seems to be transparent and weightless. In our workshop we produce a model of the Daf with tuneable natural hides. These Daf have a markedly natural sound and – in contrast to the usual models with synthetic hides – have the advantage that the tone pitch of the drumhead can be adjusted to the tonal wishes of the player. For the construction of this Daf we use the light version of the Frame Drum. This results in a lightweight Daf that is comfortable to handle and one that can be played both experimentally or traditionally.

This melodious sounding Daf is fabricated in Iran and has the distinctive characteristic of having a Remo synthetic hide drumhead especially produced for this Daf. This gives the “Persian Daf” a clear and steady sound that is much more expressive than other Daf that have common synthetic hide drumheads. This development is based on the initiative from Behnam Samani, a world renowned player and teacher of Persian percussion.
